The electricity reserve for flexible consumption is based on Fingrid's pre-purchased electricity capacity from the European electricity market. To maintain the required 50Hz frequency range, consumption flexibility is needed in the electricity grid. Participation in the reserve market depends on real-time hourly electricity prices and the available flexibility capacity of the properties involved, which can be leveraged for the electricity reserve.
The minimum threshold for aggregated participation in the FCR-N (normal frequency containment reserve) is 100 kW, but individual properties can contribute smaller loads (as low as ~10 kW) into an aggregated pool. For the FCR-D (disturbance reserve), the minimum threshold is 1000 kW.
In practice, the required total flexible capacity must be 3–4 times larger, as not all consumption can be fully reduced, nor can usage always be increased.
Examples:
1) Hot water boilers may already be sufficiently heated, or a property may not be able to increase heating at a given moment.
2) The building’s water temperature may have dropped to the lower limit and cannot be reduced further, or indoor temperatures may have fallen too low and require heating.
Cozify acts as a technical aggregator, calculating the required control demand at any given moment and, for example, adjusting the energy consumption of building heating systems and regulating battery charge levels accordingly. Through this process, electricity is either released into the grid’s flexibility reserve or sold in the required amount during the most suitable spot hours.
Participation in demand response is based on a demand response agreement made with Fingrid and the daily bidding process conducted through it. The bidding itself takes place via a separate third party, to whom Cozify transmits information about the available energy. In a 100 kW flexibility reserve, the potential savings or revenue can amount to thousands of euros.
